about

“While groups of Jewish and Gentile youth wielded fists and clubs in a
series of violent scraps for the possession of a white flag bearing the swastika symbol at Willowvale Park last night, a crowd of more than 10, 000 citizens, excited by cries of “Hail, Hitler!” became suddenly a disorderly mob and surged wildly about the park and surrounding streets, trying to gain a view of the actual combats, which soon developed in violence and intensity of racial feeling into one of the worst free-for-alls ever seen in this city…”

Front page of Toronto Star, “Draper Admits Receiving Riot Warning”, 17 August 1933.

I wasn’t quite 14 yet. I was still 13, and I walked over. I lived on Barton. I came over to the park, standing on top of the hill. We knew trouble was going to happen. [...] I never knew what anti-Semitism was at the time. I didn’t know why they hated us. But afterwards I did. And that’s a painful time.”

Lionel Mernik, who was present at the Christie Pit Riot as a 13-year-old-boy.
