about

“On 30 July 1793, a bustling Lieutenant-Governor Simcoe landed at Toronto Bay to supervise the planting of a garrison and town. With him came his perceptive wife, Elizabeth […] The Simcoes chose a good spot for their portable canvas house, boated to the end of the harbour, then, as Mrs. Simcoe wrote in her diary, ‘walked through a grove of fine Oaks where the Town is intended to be built.’ She noted that the low, wooded peninsula that sheltered the harbour broke the lake horizon and improved the view, ‘which indeed is very pleasing,’ while the waters of the bay were ‘beautifully clear and transparent.’ So Toronto began, on a kind of agreeable summer outing.”

- Toronto to 1918, An Illustrated History, J.M.S. Careless.
